WHAT DOES THE WORK CONSIST OF?
Swimming instructors are responsible for teaching swimming, organizing recreational activities and establishing the proper techniques for swimming as a form of training. Their tasks usually include planning the classes and the techniques they are going to use, keeping an eye on the evolution of their students, ensuring their safety, making sure that the facilities are suitable for use; as well as other more technical issues such as controlling temperature, water quality, etc.

Aquatic exercises are very beneficial for bones and joints, which is why they are usually recommended for rehabilitation processes and for disabled people. These therapeutic swimming instructors must know the specific swimming techniques for rehabilitative or palliative purposes, and know how to adapt them to the particular situations of the students so that the activity is beneficial and does not entail any risk.
The monitors of this field are responsible for teaching a child to function in the aquatic environment. When working with children, monitors have to further ensure that the activities are safe, as well as enjoyable and stimulating. HOW CAN YOU TRAIN AS A SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR?
While waiting for a regulation for sports professions in Spain, what exists is a Preliminary Draft Law, which if approved would take as a reference the Law for the Regulation of Sports Professions of Catalonia ( Law 3/2009, of April 23 ), a pioneer in this field. You have mainly three ways to instruct yourself:
Carrying out a specialized swimming instructor course. Your choice will depend both on the requirements that are requested and on the specialty you want (therapeutic, children…). With these courses you will learn the history of swimming, the teaching methodology, the swimming techniques or styles, and all the knowledge necessary for the development of the profession.

- Centers that teach Children’s Swimming Monitor courses
You also have the Vocational Training route, with which you will become a Higher Technician in Animation of Physical and Sports Activities, opening up the range of sports professions and that you can also complete with the first option.
Another way is the university, which will allow you to work in other sectors of sport. In this sense, you have the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences , which you can also complete with a course from the first option.
A TIP: something you should know is that by law the presence of a lifeguard is almost always mandatory in swimming pools (each Autonomous Community establishes the obligation depending on the meters of the pool, the number of people, etc.). Together with the importance of knowledge about first aid and first aid to guarantee the safety of students , it is interesting that you have some training in this regard.
